4. Registering the Death
The following people are legally allowed to register the death of your loved one:
  • A relative
  • A person present at the death
  • The occupier of the premises where your loved one passed away, if they were aware about the passing
  • The person, i.e. yourself, who is arranging the funeral for your loved one. Please remember, this does not include your Funeral Director
Following this, you will need to personally take your loved ones' Medical Certificate to the office of the Registrar of Births and Deaths and Marriages to ensure the death is legally recorded. The death is required to be registered in the district where it occurred and, where possible, should be recorded within five days however exceptions do apply (especially in Coroner's cases).
What should you take with you to the Registrar's?
  • The Medical Certificate stating the Cause of Death, from your General Practitioner, unless the coroner is involved.
  • The Medical Card of the deceased, if your loved one had one, or an alternative official form of identification for the deceased (i.e. passport, driver's licence, utility bill).
  • There is a charge for acquiring copies of a Death Certificate, please be prepared for this as it is required for legal purposes.
