SHOOBRIDGE FUNERAL SERVICES

Help with funeral costs

If you’re on a low income and need help to pay for a funeral you’re arranging, you could get a Funeral Payment benefit. The payment is intended to help pay for the funeral and is recoverable from the deceased person's estate if they have left one. We can help guide you through this process, however below are just a few steps to get you going.

  •    STEP ONE
  •    STEP TWO
  •    STEP THREE
  •    STEP FOUR
   STEP ONE

What you will get?

How much you will get depends on your circumstances. The Funeral Payment can help pay for:

Burial fees
Cremation fees, including doctors certificate
Up to £700 for funeral expenses. For example, coffin, flowers.
Travel to arrange or to get to the funeral
The costs of moving the body within the UK- put only for part of the journey that's over 50 miles

If the person that died had a pre-payment plan, you'll only get help for the items not covered on the plan. Usually, if the funeral director hasn't been paid it will pay them. If the funeral director has been paid the money will go in to your bank account.

   STEP TWO

Eligibility

To be eligible you must be responsible of the funeral and:

Claim in time
Get certain benefits of tax credits
Meet the rules of your relationship with the deceased
The rules are different if it's someone who lives outside of the UK

You must apply within 3 months of the funeral. You can make the claim even if you're waiting on a decision on qualifying benefits. How much you can get also depends on any other money available, eg from insurance policy or the deceased's estate.

If there is a close relative of the deceased that isn't getting one of the qualifying benefits you may not be able to claim.

   STEP FOUR

By post - send an SF200 to your local Jobcentre plus
By phone - only if you're the surviving partner

Bereavement Service Hotline : 0842 606 0265

You must apply within 3 months of the funeral. You can make the claim even if you're waiting on a decision on qualifying benefits. You must have an invoice from a funeral director to claim (not an estimate.)
