Funeral Director
Job Purpose

Job Description
This role requires an individual to positively represent the company, to build and maintain effective working relationships with clients, potential clients, the public, medical professionals, the clergy and other affiliated funeral trades. This position requires a high degree of professionalism and integrity, and requires the employee to contribute to the smooth and efficient running of the company. The Branch Manager/Funeral Director will be expected to act as an ambassador for Shoobridge Funeral Services in their dealings with the public and to show care and concern, especially to bereaved families. All staff are expected to comply with the company policies and procedures as set out in the company’s Code of Conduct, Procedures Manual and Health & Safety Manuals.
As an experienced and qualified Funeral Director you will be responsible for talking to families to arrange the most suitable funeral for them and complete administrative duties required to ensure the funeral goes to plan and meets the wishes of the client. Our Funeral Directors are responsible for preparing, managing and conducting funerals in a responsible and professional manner to an extremely high, professional standard. This will also include the transfer and preparation of the deceased, arranging and performing chapel of rest visits, dealing with charitable donations, organising floral tributes, confirming funeral arrangements, producing orders of service and inserting various announcements in local newspapers, carrying out other clerical and computer duties within the branch. You will be required to coordinate the funeral by ensuring the correct number of staff are available to effect the funeral, ‘brief’ staff on the proceedings and ensure all requirements of the family are met. You will also have key responsibilities leading up to the day of the funeral, including keeping close contact with clients to ensure they are comfortable and confident about the proceedings on the day of the funeral.
Following the funeral, as part of our ‘ongoing care strategy’, you will be required to maintain an appropriate level of contact with the client, being able to ‘signpost’ additional support and/or services as required.
Scope
As this individual advances in their role, it is expected that they will take on greater responsibilities in branch management and actively contribute to the overall success of the organisation.
Future pathway:
Evaluating current performance levels, assessing local market conditions and the company’s competitive position. Identifying opportunities, drafting and presenting business plans to develop strategic marketing campaigns designed to increase brand awareness of the Shoobridge Funeral Services within the local community, to effectively deliver improved business performance, both in the ‘at-need’ and ‘pre-need’ funeral marketplace.
- Developing the team by improving communication and performance, conducting regular meetings, briefing the team on current goals, marketing activity and other relevant information. Identifying training opportunities and organising relevant training. Recognise team member achievements and encourage excellence in the work environment.
- Manage marketing budgets successfully, allocating branch funds to specific projects with defined measurable financial objectives. Coordinating with other branches to share knowledge, plan promotional activities and to achieve company goals.
Skills, Attributes, and Qualifications
Diploma in Funeral Service, previous management experience, outstanding team player attitude, ability to meet set goals, driven attitude, strong leadership skills, excellent customer service skills with tact and diplomacy and the ability to demonstrate respect and empathy. Written, oral and interpersonal communication skills, clarity of expression, outstanding organisation skills, attention to the finest of detail, basic computer skills, advanced skills with Microsoft Office, flexibility, the ability to adapt quickly and make good decisions, a logical approach to problem solving, and an acceptance of different religious beliefs.
Driver/Funeral Bearer
Job Description
We are currently seeking individuals to join our team of driver/bearers.
Primarily based in either Honiton, Exeter or Exmouth, you will be required to cover funerals across all three of our branches. A full driving license is essential.
The successful applicant(s) will be required to join our ‘out-of-hours’ removal rota, which enables us to bring deceased people into our care 24 hours day.
Manual handling training will be provided. We use a variety of mechanical equipment to ensure manual lifting is reduced where possible and completed safely. Applicants must be able to perform the duties required of the role.

Coupled with the high degree of responsibility, being a funeral director is very rewarding -you will be assisting people in their ‘hour of need’ and helping to ease their burden, giving and receiving numerous details and helping to cement vital decisions that the bereaved will have to make.
A career within the funeral industry requires a great deal of compassion. There is a need to absorb other people’s distress and emotion whilst keeping somewhat detached yourself in order to reduce the emotional burden and effects on you personally. This will be a testing factor of the job but a career in the funeral industry is probably one of the most rewarding and dignified careers you could possibly choose.
