St. Mary and St. Giles Church, Buckerell

The church of St. Mary and St. Giles is located in the village of Buckerell, which is three miles west of Honiton and close to The Otter Inn and The Deer Park Country House Hotel – the village is home to approximately 200 people.
The building's origin dates back to the fourteenth century although the current tower was doubtless a later addition afforded due to safety. The church has a long, detailed and interesting history and currently, the present church tower holds six bells that are used to this day. Access to the tower and organ loft are from an outside staircase.
The church continues to run weekly services within the church except on the fifth Sunday of the month. This service is held as a joint service at neighbouring, Awliscombe. The day-to-day upkeep of the church is maintained by volunteers including a group of 'clock winders' (required every 48 hours), and a team of 'flower arrangers.'
The church also has a number of other volunteers who help with the organisation of, and within, the church. There is a dedicated team of bell ringers and support individuals who help with the services. The church also continues with recognised religious events such as baptisms, marriages and funeral services.
As Buckerell has no village hall or shop, the church is certainly the main focal point of the often holding parish council meetings inside the church itself. Surrounding the church is an open churchyard that is maintained by villagers and church parishioners.
The parish is part of the Honiton Team Mission Community and funds for its upkeep are raised from local events including the Annual Village Fete. Commendably, the church is also involved in raising money for natural disasters throughout the world.
