St. Mary's Church, Luppitt

As with so many of our local Devon churches, the building of St. Mary's dates to the time just after the Norman Conquest – the early fourteenth century. Supporting a Christian community since has its challenges, no more so than today when, encouraging young family membership is yet another demand on busy lives and teenage appeal has diminished nationally.
Amalgamating with the parishes of Broadhembury, Sheldon, Dunkeswell, Upottery and Plymtree in 1974, pastoral care is provided by the Mission Community under the leadership of the Reverend Rik Peckham, formerly of Sidford and St. Francis, Woolbrook, Sidmouth and more than ably assisted by Church Administrator, Karen Davies.
Family services are held twice a month on Sundays with Holy Communion completing morning worship on the other Sundays. Bell ringing is very popular and the church supports a team from The Guild of Devonshire Ringers who are available for weddings and funerals with the tower's eight bells.
With four other ordained ministers supporting worship in the surrounding churches, a busy church and 'social' diary is constantly updated and displayed in the parish newsletter - the 'Luppitt Packet' and the comprehensive website, www.dunkeswell.org.uk which gives brief history accounts as well as current and forthcoming events for the local and wider, busy farming community.
With activities from bell ringing, flower arranging, bible study groups, junior church, choir to a luncheon club in addition to the 'normal' church services of Baptism, weddings, funerals and Blessings it is remarkable that St. Mary's Churchyard is immaculately tended as well as the constant minor repairs that old churches are subjected to with the associated problematic, fund raising activities.
Unusual practically, burials in the churchyard are 'side by side' due to the ground structure and the practice of reserving plots still abounds though space is becoming limited. It is no surprise therefore to see two headstones for family situations. Cremated Remains have their own area though family cremations can be interred in a full grave.
The small village supports a pub and a Village Hall though the shop has long since ceased to trade. Located, six miles north of Honiton on a sloping, picturesque hillside, overlooking stunning views of the East Devon countryside, visitors to the village and the church are encouraged and warmly welcomed.
A pause on the journey to visit Wolford Chapel, the burial place of John Graves Simcoe who was the first lieutenant governor of Upper Canada is truly historic. The chapel is the property of the Canadian province of Ontario and flies the Flag of Canada despite being in the English countryside.
