SHOOBRIDGE FUNERAL SERVICES

St. Giles's Church, Northleigh

"We work with local church administrators to create personal and caring funeral arrangements

for the deceased and their loved ones."

Funeral Director Northleigh

Located amongst Devon's rolling hillsides, this current church building was originally built after the Norman Conquest though a timber construction is thought to have preceded this.

Incorporating local Beer stone, the church has been altered on several occasions – notably, the 15th century historically saw a collection of beautifully carved oak benches and the early 17th century, additions in wood just have to be seen to be appreciated.

The church tower holds 4 medieval bells, which are thought to be the only complete pre-Reformation bells in Devon with the oldest cast in 1450 and the other 3 in 1490. Inscribed in Latin, the treble reads, 'St Peter pray for us'; the second carries the words, 'With my living voice I drive away all hurtful things' and the 3rd and tenor bells are inscribed, 'Upon me has been conferred that beloved name Jesus'.

Containing a Jacobean carved pulpit with frieze of acanthus flowers and a Jacobean altar table; animal and grotesque gargoyles on the exterior together with stained glass depicting St. Peter and St. Paul inside; St Giles's history includes records of the first priest Stephen Brente, who was named to the post on the eve of the Black Death in 1349.

St. Giles is probably not as famous as many of the other saints? The Patron Saint of Cripples, St. Giles was of reputed royal gentry, became a recluse, a hermit who lived in southern France and was reputedly shot accidentally. He died in the early part of the 8th century, with the highest repute for sanctity and miracles.

A church with a long and interesting history is supported with heritage attractions that abound locally and under the joint religious leadership of the Rev. Peter Walker, church and social activities are kept current and can be accessed online on the village website, northleigh.net. The church is open by day and visitors are welcome especially to religious services – also displayed on the website. The churchyard is still open for burials and the interment of cremated remains.
