The continuing presence and upkeep of St. Mary the Virgin Church, Upottery, is largely down to three communities working together - Upottery, Rawridge and Smeatharpe. Historically, the oldest parts of the church building date from the 12th century. Interesting facts refer to parts of the floor which are made from old grave slabs.
St. Mary the Virgin Church offers a variety of monthly services including all types of worship, from the Book of Common Prayer to the more modern, non-liturgical services.
In conjunction with praise and worship services, Upottery church offers a picturesque and communal location for the many home groups who meet there on a regular basis: Young Wives Group, Women's Bible-study Group, the Prayer Group, 'Off-the-Bus' teenage group, Men's Breakfast Group and a Men's Fellowship Group – truly a very active church and community.
Although lacking a resident organist, St. Mary the Virgin has been fortunate enough to enjoy the services of two organists from outside the village who cover three of the monthly services – this has also given rise to a regeneration of the choir with four new members recently added.
Moreover, Upottery church, plays host to a thriving Junior Church who meet twice a month; members are encouraged to attend and take part in All Age Worship services. Local outreach and community support are noteable and praiseworthy aspects of local church and volunteer life.
A weekly leaflet ensures up-to-date congregational and useful information. Forthcoming events and services, as well as a prayer list and space for your personal messages are included in the publication. There is also a 'parish pump,' – a website for parish magazines; published monthly (for ten months of the year), church information is included with a letter from the vicar.
