Situated on the western approach road to Honiton, the Roman Catholic Church was built in only 7 months in 1937 by local builders, Hansford's of Honiton.
The history of Catholicism in Honiton dates back to the 16th century when 'Reformation' caused its abandonment. Though forced 'underground,' the faith survived Protestant attempts to dominate Christianity and records show meetings at the Deer Park followed by the purchase of the site where 41 Church Hill now stands. The church moved to St. Rita's Centre (Broomhill House) in 1935 under the responsibility of the Augustinian Recollect Order.
St. Rita of Cascia is renowned and known as, "The saint of the impossible." Her message remains as applicable today as through her life of suffering and forgiveness. The Augustinian Recollect not only offers St. Rita's Retreat and Conference Centre as a facility for excellent accommodation but also as a place of and for, relaxation and peace.
Honiton Roman Catholic Church, shares a joint ministry and responsibility which extends to St. Anthony's Church in Ottery St. Mary and follows the fundamental principle of its Recollect – that of, 'community.'
As such, the presence of the Roman Catholic church locally and throughout the country remains - they live, work and pray in the community; they run education establishments, parishes, hospitals and missions as well as centres like St. Rita's.
The resources of the local Catholic Church, under the Plymouth Diocese, keep-up with technological advances and as such, services, events, newsletters and tributes can easily be found on their many websites. Visitors are welcomed and encouraged to attend the friendly outreach services. The atmosphere and conviviality of the physical church building in Exeter Road as well as the personal welcome of the priests is one of relaxation and calm, a pleasant, peaceful and pleasing experience.
