Honiton Evangelical Congregational Church

The Honiton Evangelical Congregational Church was officially consecrated in 1771 following the destruction of the previous chapel by fire in 1765. The congregation consisted of a group of Baptists who believed in their own local autonomy under God.
The land on which the church was built, was finally secured for the sum of £5.00 in 1844 thereby securing the church's future within the town. Subsequently, in 1869, the 'The Manse,' formerly Parsonage House was purchased for £375.00.
In 1837, the Honiton Independence Chapel was allowed to perform the solemnisation of marriages - one of only 63 non-conformist churches in the country to be allowed.
The church is located on Honiton's High Street – towards the east end or, just below the former Honiton Pottery. Since its construction, there have been some modifications and additions including a 'Prayer Room,' in 1850 and a schoolroom to the rear of the building more recently.
Each Sunday, the church holds two meetings for worship, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. The church welcomes new members to their weekly congregation, which currently consists of people from a large range of differing and diverse backgrounds, mostly within the local community though seasonal visitors are often present too.
In addition to Sunday services, the church also hosts various events within the church including the 'Parent and Toddler Group' on Wednesdays as well as other midweek meetings.
Founded nearly a quarter of a millennia ago, the church has been a key part of the Honiton landscape and a vital contributor to the local community. Their congregation are regularly active in raising donations for charitable causes which doubtless, changes the lives of countless people.
