Built originally circa 1260, Bishop John de Grandisson of Exeter rebuilt the church in 1342. Modelled closely on Exeter Cathedral accounts for the somewhat disproportionate size relative to the town's population. With a weathercock approximately 500 years old and probably the oldest in Europe, the last major alteration was the addition of a second aisle on the north side called the 'Dorset Aisle' in 1520. Since the addition, St. Mary's Church's appearance remains virtually unchanged.
Otter Vale Mission Community serves parishes along the Lower Otter Valley which include Colaton Raleigh, Newton Poppleford, Harpford, Venn Ottery, Tipton St. John, West Hill, Wiggaton, Alfington, Escot, Feniton, and Payhembury as well as the town of Ottery St. Mary.
The parish office, located in The College, is open Monday to Friday between 9.30 and 11.30 a.m. and the local town cemetery, open during daylight hours, is a tranquil location not far from the parish church. The churchyard is only 'open' for the interment of cremated remains.
Supporting a large community from the heart of the River Otter, the Mission Community plays host to numerous different church groups, societies and clubs including a ministry for the younger members of the community.
With an array of sports and other local organisations, Ottery St. Mary is a busy hamlet, it also features a large garden centre which is popular with, and open to, the public.
