St. Mary's Church, Whimple

St. Mary's Church is one of the four community churches that comprise Churches4All under the leadership of Rev. Chris Martin and his assistant curate, Sheila Walker. The other community churches within Churches4All are Talaton, Clyst Hydon and Clyst St. Lawrence.
Situated within the heart the village of Whimple, St. Mary's Church has weekly Sunday services as well as a range of events throughout the year.
Located in the village square, St. Mary's Church history dates back to the late fifteenth century with the most significant structural changes being made in 1845 when the building underwent a Norman rebuild and extension. Although the church was altered dramatically at that time - parts of the church's structure were altered in the sixteenth century.
It is understood that the purpose of the rebuild was to accommodate a growing congregation by providing additional seating. Since 1845, there have been a few further significant changes including that of a new organ being installed in 1952 as well as the redesign of the chancel in 1902. The churchyard can no longer accommodate burials, which consequently, take place in the church annexe.
The village of Whimple has a thriving population and encompasses a range of amenities. There are two local pubs, a village shop, a Post Office, a Bed-and-Breakfast and a hairdresser.
St. Mary's Church have their own youth group, which organises events to raise money for charity, as well as having a worship band that play twice a month at services held within the church. The church also has a Church Choir who sing within services once a month, as well as at special services including a candlelit Advent carol service before Christmas.
