SHOOBRIDGE FUNERAL SERVICES | FUNERAL DIRECTORS HONITON
It has been our dream to do this and now it is a reality: we can hold full-scale funeral services in our very own 50-seater private chapel.
And it comes at a great time. Just as everyone is feeling the strain of the economic crisis, we are offering our chapel to families to use for free, rather than them paying to hold it in the crematorium chapel.
We can also tailor our packages to suit your budget. There is a rise in direct or pure cremations and this is often down to the cost of a full funeral. We can offer an option for families to hold a small, simple goodbye in our chapel, followed by a direct or pure cremation. So, if cost is a large reason not to have a ceremony, then please get in touch as we can work with you to create the bespoke funeral that is right for you, suiting your specific budget.
Every funeral that we, Shoobridge Funeral Services has the privilege of conducting, is different, every family we work with is different and this makes every experience unique. It is an honour for us to hold funerals wherever the family wants to hold them. This is usually in crematoria chapels or churches but we can also take them at natural burial grounds, the beach and, once, in a town hall which was beautifully decorated and worked really well.
However, having our own dedicated chapel in Honiton is very special indeed. It is a very calming, light, airy and peaceful space with a gorgeous natural light from the windows at the back. We had a funeral recently which was small and intimate so we arranged the chairs in a horseshoe shape around mum’s coffin and it was a moving, personal goodbye. The family could stay on in the chapel afterwards by themselves as they knew they didn’t have to hurry away.
On the other end of the scale, we held a big funeral with a packed chapel last Saturday. The family arrived early and had teas and coffees and plenty of time to become reacquainted with distant relatives before the service. The service was streamed over the web in three different countries as many people joined us online. The family organised a beautiful well-crafted visual tribute for their mum using many lovely photographs. It was very moving! At the end of the service, the congregation stayed for a while before heading off to the Otter Inn - a local and pub just over the bridge next to the river a few miles away.
We have another Saturday funeral in a couple of weeks. It is an increasingly becoming a popular option as it accommodates members of the family and friends who have busy working weeks.
We are yet to hold our first evening funeral but that’s another option in our funeral chapel in Honiton. We can’t wait to watch the sun go down whilst using this space for such a special occasion!
We have kitted the chapel out with all the latest technology used in crematoria across the country, including the ability to live stream the service and produce visual tributes which all adds to the personal nature of the ceremony.
When it is not being used for services, our desire is for the chapel to be at the centre of a busy schedule of coffee mornings, bereavement support groups and workshops. Compassionate Friends, our new bereavement support group which meets monthly, is our way of ‘checking in’ with the families we have looked after so that our level of care can be expanded. People can come to meet other people who are feeling what they are feeling, or they can come to ask for help and support.
Penny Shoobridge, Shoobridge Funeral Services Honiton, says: “This is our way of supporting families, of reducing the cost of funerals. In our new private chapel, we have created a very peaceful space. It is light and airy with high ceilings and we have seating for 50 people.
Paul Shoobridge adds; “Families can choose the goodbye that they want for their loved one and we can deliver it, whatever that send-off looks like.
“It could be anything from a traditional funeral to a late-night vigil of favourite music. Whatever a family wants or needs, we can deliver it – on their own timescale.”
This is not the first time Shoobridge Funeral Services has led the way. Thirty years ago, Terry and Penny Shoobridge were the first husband and wife team of funeral directors in the area. When their son, Paul, came on board in 2011, he expanded the business with branches in Exeter and Exmouth. They were also the first independent funeral directors locally to embrace the idea of having a website!
