Pre-plans are usually made with local funeral directors which, in most towns or cities, narrows the options regarding searches and all holders of plans are usually issued with a plastic card similar to a debit or credit card – entitled, ‘Membership Card.’ A frequent occurrence is to naturally, ‘play down’ our own final arrangements in the often misguided ideal that we can reduce the pain of suffering to those we love and know. It is a misconception in the majority of cases. Of course, it is extremely sad that the deceased person has departed but for the family, friends and colleagues, it is fundamentally necessary to attend a memorial occasion for their own personal grief journey. If a friend has impacted or positively affected someone else’s life, they have ‘made a difference.’ It is only natural therefore that there be a mechanism to acknowledge that ‘difference’ and say, “Goodbye,” – a mechanism to share our thoughts and feelings with like-minded people who also cared for the deceased.
