WHAT TO DO WHEN DEATH OCCURS
Dying At Home
A doctor, locum, Community Nurse or other medical practitioner, will need to attend the deceased to,
‘Certify the Medical Cause of Death’. Following their attendance the funeral director can be informed and requested to attend in order to bring the person into their care.
The ‘Medical Certificate of the Cause of Death,’ is unlikely to be issued at this stage. The G.P. responsible for the person who has died will issue the Medical Certificate of the Cause of Death (MCCD) and inform the Registrar electronically and provide the Registrar with the ‘Informant’s’ or Next of Kin's details, This MCCD certificate is not the ‘Death Certificate.’ The ‘Death Certificate’ is issued by the Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages following the registration.
Since March 2020, due to the issues presented by COVID-19, remote registration (telephone) has been, and remains in, effect. When someone passes away in England or Wales, the death has to be registered within FIVE days of the occurrence in the district where the death occurred.
The attending doctor, locum, Community Nurse or medical practitioner will be able to provide more information regarding this subject.
Helping you through every step
Some people choose to die at home where they feel safe and comfortable. The surroundings are familiar and they can be in the presence of their family, loved ones and friends.
When someone who has chosen to die at home passes away, there is no immediately urgency to do anything. The family may need a short period of time to understand or accept the event that just happened.
Following a death at home, when you are ready, you will need to contact the deceased's doctor (G.P.), at their local surgery or the 'out-of-hours' service telephone number to notify them of the death.

We are here to help, to provide you with any advice, guidance or support that you might need at this difficult time. 'We' can only bring the deceased into our care following the doctor or nurse's attendance. If you would like the deceased to remain at home for a short period of time, please advise us when making contact with us - we will give guide you accordingly.
